Frequently asked Questions

Do I need a Permit?
Here are some of the items that would require the homeowner or landowner to get a wastewater permit:

  • Change of original use in the dwelling
  • Creation of a new lot (subdivision)
  • Failed septic system
  • Failed potable water supply
  • Design flow changes from what was originally permitted

Has my system failed?
A failed system is a wastewater system that allows untreated wastewater to be exposed to the open air, pool up on the ground, discharge directly into surface waters, back up into a building or structure, contaminate a potable water source and presents a threat to human health.

Is my system working properly?
If you do not see any of the conditions that are listed in the “Has my system failed” part of this page then there is a good chance that your system is working the way it was designed to.  There may be situations that could hamper the proper operation of your wastewater disposal system though; groundwater could infiltrate your tanks and cause additional stresses to disposal system and shortening the life span of the system.  Any indications of this should be repaired as soon as possible to prevent premature failure of the wastewater disposal system.
